Yahoo are now working on a new mapping algorithm that will suggest routes that are "not only short but also emotionally pleasant."

Daniele Quercia and Luca Maria Aiello of Yahoo Labs in Barcelona in collaboration with the University of Torino's Rossano Schifanella, have come up with the idea to develop a mapping formula to help users find the most "emotionally pleasant" routes available whilst travelling.

They asked over 3,000 people to choose the prettiest places in London from a collection of Google Street View shots. Using that information, they created a database and graphs capable of selecting the most scenic routes.

  • According to the data collected, the eight most beautiful places in London are Kingsway Street, Millennium Bridge, Blackfriars Bridge, Covent Garden, Charlotte Street, Fleet Street, Smithfield Market, and Bloomsbury Street.

  • "The goal of this work is to automatically suggest routes that are not only short but also emotionally pleasant," said Quercia. "Based on a quantitative validation, we find that, compared to the shortest routes, the recommended ones add just a few extra walking minutes and are indeed perceived to be more beautiful, quiet and happy."
