The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has finally joined the world of Twitter, racking up over 60,000 followers within an hour of its first tweet

This week, the CIA officially joined Twitter and Facebook, welcoming itself to the social networking sites with a short-but-sweet hello.

"We can neither confirm nor deny that this is our first tweet," it said on Twitter. Later adding to its page, "Thank you for the @Twitter welcome! We look forward to sharing great #unclassified content with you."

The account has already picked up hundreds of thousands of followers, with its first tweet being retweeted 50,000 times. The CIA has stated that its "social media expansion" will also feature its profile tweeting throwback Thursday photos, fun facts and agency updates.

Moving into the world of 21st century technology, the CIA joins other government agencies, such as the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service, on the social media site.
