Instagram overtakes Twitter drawing in 300 million monthly users
Instagram's new user figures have outdone Twitter's 284 million monthly 'tweeters', and the app has brought in an incredible 100 million extra regular users in just 9 months. "Over the past four years, what began as two friends with a dream has grown into a global community," said Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom.
After Facebook purchased Instagram for $1 billion in April 2012, many speculated that the app would slowly decrease in popularity and become too commercial, but to the contrary this news shows that its success is only climbing: A staggering 70 million photos are posted to Instagram every day.
The app will shortly debut verified stickers for authorised celebrities and brands – much like Twitter do, to curb fake accounts. Instagram is also in the process of deleting all spam accounts and is slowly introducing ads to monetise the platform. At present the ads are few and far between, but plans are in place to increase them for 2015.
