Facebook to launch Internet drones the size of Boeing 747s

The social network to take flight

For a few months now, we’ve understood that Facebook wants to beam wireless Internet access to unconnected parts of the world using solar-powered, laser-equipped drones, and now, more news has been revealed by one of the project’s leaders

This week, it was revealed that Facebook's new drones could be tested as early as next year, and would be roughly the size of a Boeing 747. The flying devices would also be solar-powered – enabling them to fly for months or even years at a time.

In order for this ambitious proposal to become a reality Facebook would need to ensure the drones stay clear of all commercial airspace at all times, meaning they'd have to fly extremely high up in the air. Once operational, the drones aims will be to supply Internet access to specific areas in Latin America, Africa and Asia.
