Apple launch new patent for "fall protection" technology
No more shattered screens
Apple have successfully patented a new technology that will help keep your iPhone in one piece. The technology is able to detect when your device is in free fall and to react mid-air and rotate into a position that will minimise damage upon impact. This should help make cracked and shattered screens a thing of the past and help with the longevity of smartphones as vital components will be preserved.
The technology relies on motion detection systems, which initiate during a fall, to establish the trajectory and therefore initial point of impact. After a rapid assessment the smartphone can activate rotating motors (the same functions used to create the vibrate mode) which move a weight inside to reposition the phone. The patent also includes descriptions of other more advanced and fantastic scenarios, including ejection devices for cables, and even retractable air foils to control the velocity and angle of descent.
It is unclear whether the fall protection measures will be installed in the iPhone 7. However we can certainly expect to see this technology roll out across Apple products within the next ten years...
