Mayar Sherif just became Egypt's first female tennis player to qualify for the 2021 Olympics
Over the weekend, tennis player Mayar Sherif made history as she became the first Egyptian woman to secure her spot in the French Open's main draw (also known as the Roland-Garros Series). This historic win also makes Sherif the first Egyptian female tennis player to qualify for the Olympics in 2021.
To secure her spot in the tournament, Sherif competed in three qualifying matches in the main draw beating Colombian tennis player Maria Camila Osorio Serrano, American Caty McNally, and Italian player Giulia Gatto-Monticone — becoming the first Egyptian female to win a Grand Slam match.
"Yes dreams come true! Honoured to be the first Egyptian woman in history of tennis to win a Grand Slam match at #rolandgarros," Sherif wrote in a Facebook post.
Currently, Sherif ranks 172nd in the world's top 300, and we can't wait to see her make her Olympic debut at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
