Buro 24/7 Exclusive: A polo masterclass with La Martina
At the Desert Palm, Dubai
Recently a rare opportunity was presented to us – to experience a special class instructed by an expert coach. The event, which was hosted in the serene grounds of the Desert Palm by La Martina, featured a unique insight into the international world of polo over a delicious breakfast of pastries and coffee, before being invited to try the sport for ourselves.
"The thing that I love most about polo is the lifestyle – being with horses every day is such a luxury," coach Pablo Agustin Casero enthused, "Another great thing is the amount of jobs that polo creates, from the groomsmen to the trainers, behind every player there are at least 10 jobs."
Casero also explained how open-minded the sport is: "There is no age limit for polo players, like there is in other sports. I knew this man who was 76-years-old and he was still playing, he used to take a step to get onto the horse – he couldn't even reach the stirrup, but once he was there with the mallet in his hands, he was off! When you start polo is becomes an addiction."
With regards to advice for budding polo players, coach Casero explained: "I would say to people looking to get into polo later on in life to just go for it, work hard at it and take it seriously. Obviously take it as a hobby and have fun – but there are a lot of people who just come once every fifteen days and then complain when they can't hit the ball! With polo you have to work at it, dedicate yourself – but it is so worthwhile once you get the hang of it, I can promise you that."
