UAE royals and VIPs celebrate British Polo Day Dubai
A highlight of the UAE's spring calendar
Marking the beginning of the region's biggest equine weekend, British Polo Day Dubai was the season finale of the British Polo Day UAE Series - a unique tour which has seen some of Britain's best young players and polo enthusiasts come to the UAE.
Her Highness Sheikha Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was amongst the notable guests, whom joined Mohammed Al Habtoor to showcase Dubai polo to a mixed crowd featuring high-profile local and international attendees.
Dominic Jermey, Her Majesty's Ambassador to the UAE said: "The British Polo Day series of events have grown over the years to become one of the leading polo events of today. The event is celebrated in more than 10 different countries and as UK Ambassador to the UAE I am proud that the UAE is one of them and the only such country in the Middle East".
Upon arrival guests were greeted with an entertaining Hackett Camel Polo Cup match, featuring members of the elite Cavalry and Guards Regiments of the British Army - following their triumph at last week's British Polo Day Abu Dhabi.
The day followed with a match between Eton College and Harrow, which provided an exciting backdrop to British Polo Day Dubai's quintessential British lunch on the Club Terrace, with Eton defeating Harrow by three goals to nil.
Players from Oxford and Cambridge then went head-to-head in the Gaucho Cup - a thrilling game in which the Jaeger-LeCoultre Cambridge team eventually won seven goals to one against the Oxford Group Holdings Oxford team.
The day reached its peak in the landmark Land Rover Thesiger Trophy, fought between the British Exiles and Habtoor Polo - the hosts and generous patrons who have put the UAE on the global polo 'map' - with the home team Habotoor Polo emerging victorious with an an 8-5 victory.
British Polo Day Dubai came to an end as the sun set over the polo fields and the prestigious prizes were awarded, including the sought-after 'Land Rover Thesiger Trophy', presented by His Highness Sheikh Shakboot bin Nahyan al Nayhan and Land Rover's Justin Weaving to Mohammed Al Habtoor.
