First look: Designs for the world's first Amethyst Hotel in China
Its a gem
It is not unusual to see an amethyst crystal on a necklace chain, but Dutch designers, NL Architects, have proposed a new kind of chain to feature the gemstone – a hotel chain.
China is set to be the first place to have the crystalline Amethyst Hotel, which will be sited on the man-made island – Ocean Flower. China is a well suited first location, as amethyst stones hold an important place in the Chinese art of feng shui.
Chinese culture, together with many other spiritualists, believe in the natural calming and peace giving properties of the amethyst crystal, a belief that dates back to ancient Greece.
The building's exterior is designed to look like a cross-section of a natural geological formation, and the rooms are located around the central void of the building, allowing for generous exposure to sunlight. Access to the rooms will be from the outer perimeter of the building, via a circular corridor.
The inner heart of the building is formed by crystalline clusters that organically adorn the interiors. Each of the rooms will benefit from direct proximity to the special gem, and bask in the naturally reflected soft violet light created by the stone.
Whilst China seems to be the first to slate development of the hotel, NL Architects have ambitions to bring the Amethyst Hotel to a number of other locations worldwide.
