The UAE vice president and prime minister and ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has taken to Twitter to praise social media and thank his millions of followers

The Dubai ruler tweeted: "My social media followers exceeded 3 million on Twitter, 2 million on Facebook and 1 million on both Instagram and Google+. I extend my thanks to all followers and to everyone interacting with us through providing new comments, suggestions and ideas."

Highlighting the importance of social media networking in the digital eta, he noted that the likes of Twitter and Instagram "created new opportunities, removed all barriers and made the audience part of our development plans."

Sheikh Mohammed added that social media had a powerful influence and serves as an open parliament and cannot be ignored or misled. His Highness also thanked all of his social media networks and the positive participation from his followers who use social media networking to offer suggestions, ideas and initiatives that add positive energy to the socio-economic growth of the UAE.

Last year, the UAE vice president took to Twitter to ask his followers to assist him with a brainstorming session, saying at the time: "We want every man, woman and child to join us in the biggest ever national brainstorming session to find new ideas for health and education." Adding in another tweet "Education and health concern all of us, so I invite all of UAE society to think collectively of creative solutions."

To celebrate his accession as ruler of Dubai in 2014, Sheikh Mohammed launched the Twitter hashtag 'Thank-you Khalifa' in Arabic in recognition and appreciation of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who he praised as "a man of efforts and initiatives, which touch us all."

Most recently, during the holy month of Ramadan, Sheikh Mohammed launched the UAE Water Aid campaign through social media. Achieving an incredible 180 million AED of donations during the month – which will now provide clean drinking water to more than seven million people in poor countries. He also announced a $1 million prize to end global water shortage.

Sheikh Mohammed isn't the only social media fan in the UAE royal family either – whether his son is inspired by his father's social media use, or vice versa is unclear – but Sheikh Hamdan is just as active as his father, the Dubai ruler, posting various daredevil stunts and regularly videoing himself atop of the world's tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa and posting them to his Instagram account.

What the forward-thinking Maktoum has up his sleeve to utilise the power of social media in the near future only will time will tell... we're sure it will be just as pioneering as the 65-year-old man himself.
