With plans to host the final of Qatar’s World Cup tournament in 2022, the Lusail Stadium's progress has accelerated as celebrated UK architects Foster + Partners have been appointed to design the colossal arena. Located in Lusail City, 15 km north of Doha, the stadium will be host to the opening ceremony with plans to seat around 80,000 spectators.

Lord Foster, chairman and founder of Foster + Partners had this to say about the recent contract: “It is an honour to design this centrepiece stadium. This is an exciting step forward in the stadium design – it will be the first to break the mould of the free-standing suburban concept, and instead anticipates the grid of this future city, of which it will be an integral part.”

The state-of-the-art stadium will include an open-air pitch and a controlled temperature of 26 degrees celsius, thanks to high tech and green systems.

Hassan Al Thawadi, the SC secretary general said: “We are excited to announce that the design contract has been awarded to Foster + Partners for Lusail Stadium. We look forward to working with them in creating an iconic, contemporary stadium inspired by Qatari culture. Lussail Stadium will be the centre-piece of the tournament, and [an] architecturally innovative stadium, which maintains sporting functionality and delivers on our sustainability commitments.”
