After the big release of Nike’s ‘The Last Game’ promotional film advert for the World Cup, advertising companies Wieden + Kennedy and Passion have released some behind the scenes footage of what it took to create the animation

The two established firms collaborated on the project, which took 7 months and involved over 100 artists and 25 animators. They managed to overcome many difficulties faced when trying to animate the featured football stars, which included Neymar Jr, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and more.

Alex Huguet, who was the character supervisor on the project, spoke to designboom about some of the processes they went through when creating the film, including modeling and texturing, agreeing on character styles, and travelling overseas for meetings with director Jon Saunders to name a few.

He revealed that it took approximately two weeks to compile the designs for each character – with the players themselves being involved in the development of their own animated designs – Wayne Rooney was the easiest to draw and was the first one to be completed, while Cristiano Ronaldo was the most difficult.

The film's director, Jon Saunders of Passion, clarified his satisfaction with the final product: "There is no experience I have had that can compare to making a NIKE film. This film challenged all of Passion in the level of expectations that we set for ourselves as well as what NIKE set for us... I couldn't ask for a better team. They took hold of my initial ideas and brought them to places beyond my expectations."
