Snapchat has announced a new partnership with payments startup company Square, which will enable its users to send money when using the popular messaging app

Snapchat will now recognise the dollar sign as being a signal that a user wants to send money. When '$' is typed into a message, a big green button will pop up – providing the option to send a payment using a connected debit card. Square will then store the card's number and take care of the transaction.

Many messaging apps and services are currently considering similar to allow users to send money as well as the standard text, pictures, and videos. However, Snapchat's CEO Evan Spiegel explained that he does not see the new add-on money service being able to compete with the likes of PayPal, although they have managed to beat Facebook to the idea.
