On Friday, UK-based construction firm Balfour Beatty won a $353 million contract from Emaar Properties to build an extension to The Dubai Mall

The latest Emaar Properties contract has been awarded to Balfour Beatty's Dubai-based joint venture, Dutco Balfour Beatty (who completed the Dubai Mall's original construction) with the expansion works consisting of a new 'Fashion Avenue' in between the existing Dubai Mall and the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.

The new Downtown Dubai project which is due for completion in 2016, will employ over 2,000 operatives, with the space featuring 100 stores, increasing the capacity of Dubai Mall to 100 million shoppers a year.

Balfour Beatty CEO Andrew McNaughton said: "The Middle East is a growth region for the Group and we are very pleased to continue our partnership with Emaar Properties on the development of downtown Dubai which builds on the original construction of the Dubai Mall.
