BMW is restoring Elvis Presley's classic 507 roadster
A vintage car of kings
Following on from the recent news that Jaguar has acquired the largest vintage car collection in the world, BMW has some exciting news to share, too.
Near the end of his military stint in Germany, it is reported that Elvis Presley picked up a BMW 507 roadster for a fraction of what it should have cost. Just 252 of the 507 shape were built by BMW, and this one undoubtedly led the most fascinating life.
In fact, long before Elvis set eyes on it, the car was BMW's official show car for the Frankfurt Motor Show. It then saw duty as BMW's official press fleet car, and then professional racing car status driven by the legendary Hans Stuck.
When Presley took possession of the car it was in need of a substantial overhaul, and in addition to rebuilding the engine, Elvis updated its colour of factory white, replacing with a bright red... Legend has it that Elvis chose red to prevent women from writing their phone numbers on the car in lipstick.
After changing hands a few times more, a California collector bought the car and kept it locked up for several decades. Recently, the car wound up in the hands of an owner with an appreciation for its history and having it fully restored by BMW Classic.
