In Focus: Fisht Olympic Stadium debut for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics
Designed by Populous
After yesterday's release of Sochi's new olympic app, the 2014 Winter Games are now officially underway as the competition kick start today at the Fisht Olypmic Stadium.
International architecture firm Populous were the creative engineers behind the futuristic stadium which will host more countries than any other Winter Olympic Games. The shell-like design was inspired by the jewel-encrusted Faberge egg, a renowned Russian icon.
The 45,000 capacity stadium contains more than 8,000 tonnes of steel, with a roof made from translucent polycarbonate that will facilitate illuminated projections of shows during the games. The Fisht Olympic Stadium will become the focal point of the 200-hectare olympic park with the Caucasus Mountains providing a beautiful backdrop for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.
The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics starts today and will end on Sunday February 23.
