The Populous designed arena in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, will host four group stage matches during the 2014 FIFA World Cup

The Arena das Dunas in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil, was inaugurated last week, created by world-renowned staduim designers, Poplulous.

The venue has a capacity to hold 42,000 people including 10,600 temporary seats for the 2014 FIFA World Cup which will take place in June, when the arena will host a total of four group stage matches.

The design of the arena was inspired by the coastal city of Natal's flowing sand dune landscape, constructed by solid modules made of steel trusses, which are insulated, and clad in aluminum tiles. Besides sporting events the multipurpose venue plans to hold trade shows and concerts, including a 22,000m2 outdoor plaza which will also be used to host events.

Populous explained, "the arena's design is unique. Its façade and roof are integrated and made up of 20 petal-shaped modules, designed to be higher on one of the stadium's sides, giving the impression that the sand dunes - which are common in the region - are moving. The design also enables more ventilation and light to come into the stadium."

The 2014 FIFA World Cup begins on June 12.
