High dive: The glass-bottomed swimming pool set to join two towers in London
"Never done before"
A 25-metre-long glass-bottomed 'sky pool' has been announced to adjoin two residential buildings in London's Nine Elms. Set to complete in 2017, the swimming pool will be five metres-wide and three metres-deep and encased by 20 cm of glass, allowing residents to take in stunning, and possibly darling views of London while paddling laps at the top of the tower.
Arup Associates helmed the design with specialist advice from structural design engineers Eckersley O' Callaghan and aquarium designers Reynolds: "My vision for the sky pool stemmed from a desire to push the boundaries in the capability of construction and engineering," said Ballymore Group (responsible for the development) chairman and CEO, Sean Mulryan. "I wanted to do something that had never been done before." We've never seen anything like it. Have you?
