Deconstructing Dubai Design Week
The Middle East is set to be world’s newest design hub
It's set to be the biggest design fair in the local calendar and no matter your taste or style, there's something that will catch your eye at the inaugural Dubai Design Week. Here's a little teaser...
Expect to see design installations around the city by local artists like Aljoud Lootah with her Yaroof, a geometric installation inspired by a type of traditional fishing. As well Truss.T by Zeinab AlHashemi, which was inspired in part by dhow sailing boats, will become part of the city's constant evolution through transformative construction.
For more fresh outlooks, head over to the Global Grad Show, bringing together 50 ground-breaking projects from 10 of the world's leading design universities. Then wander through Dubai Design Dictrict's (d3) walkways to discover Abwab: six pavilions of design from six countries (Jordan, Kuwait, Pakistan, KSA, UAE and Tunisia) under the universal theme of Games: The Element of Play in Culture.
From the talks and workshops programme there are keynotes with star architects and designers Bernard Khoury (Lebanon), Humberto Campana (Brazil) and Lee Broom (UK) as well as celebrated LA artists Paige Smith in partnership with S*uce and Christian Lacroix's Sacha Walchoff. Under 'Destination', designers from six international design weeks — Beijing, Helsinki, Istanbul, Melbourne, Mexico City, San Francisco — will be presenting their never before seen design brands' collections.
From never before seen designs to reinventing common items; artists Sacha Walckhoff for Verreum and Iyad Naja blend East and West to reinterpret the humble table and stool. Share their passion for beautiful designs and precious raw materials at o'de rose on October 28.
Also running concurrently with Dubai Design Week is Downtown Design, the region's fastest-growing design trade fair, which will bring more than 90 designers from 24 countries to present their pioneering innovations in furniture, lighting, bathrooms, kitchens, textiles and accessories.
Dubai Design Week runs form October 26-31 at the Dubai Design District.
