Couple of the week: Prince William and Kate Middleton
A stateside state visit
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge put us in a New York state of mind this week during their visit to the city that never sleeps. The pregnant Duchess looked radiant, following a few months out of the spotlight laying low at her family home, after suffering with acute morning sickness.
The duo dutifully attended official engagements and even had time to enjoy some quintessentially New York activities like a trip to the top of the Empire State Building and a Brooklyn Nets basketball game.
“It is often said that students leave St. Andrews either an alcoholic or married. Thankfully for me and Catherine, we ended up married.”
The couple’s three-day visit to the U.S involved a busy agenda of official state visits and charitable appearances. These included a visit to the 9/11 Memorial Centre, where the Prince held talks with President Barack Obama and gave a speech to the World Bank on wildlife crime. All in a days work for our favourite pair, who, as ever, took everything in their stride.
As expected the style stakes were well played by both William and Kate. William exuded Saville Row sartorial perfection, whilst his Duchess sported designs by the chic all american label J. Crew – but, being P.C, also brought some British fashion heritage stateside, with a stunning fuchsia Mulberry coat. We thought this was quite topical following the recent appointment of Johnny Coca, the design house’s new creative director.
Kim Kardashian famously tried and failed to 'break the Internet' earlier this year, but the British royals came close when they met their American pop royal counterparts – Beyonce and Jay Z. The power foursome greeted each other courtside at a basket ball game, where NBA star Le Bron James handed the couple an adorable team jersey with Prince George’s name on it. We’ve never known a future King and his Queen to be quite so cool...
The final engagement of their New York visit was the gala fundraising dinner in honour of St. Andrew’s University, where the couple first met, hosted at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Speaking at the dinner, which was also attended by Tom Hanks and Anna Wintour, William quipped: “It is often said that students leave St. Andrews either an alcoholic or married. Thankfully for me and Catherine, we ended up married”
After a lull in activity from the royal pair, this trip has topped up our quota for news and pictures of the happy couple who seem more in love than ever as they prepare to add another little prince or princess to their adorable family.
