Chanel’s new High Jewellery collection is a tribute to one of Gabrielle Chanel’s greatest love affairs

Le Paris Russe de Chanel
Chanel have just revealed a brand new High Jewellery collection, Le Paris Russe de Chanel, and the inspiration behind it will tug at your heartstrings...

Chanel is undoubtedly one of the most prominent maison’s of all time and it would be almost impossible to argue the claim that Gabrielle Coco Chanel was (or probably still is) the most famous designer in history. Her story has almost become legendary in fashion mythology as every single release of the fashion house highlights a significant moment in her life.

Case in point: the French fashion house’s latest High Jewellery collection launch pays tribute to one of Coco’s love affairs.

In 1921, the young fashion designer had a short-lived yet life-changing love affair with a Russian royal, Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich Romanov, the cousin of Czar Nicolas II. Whilst he was found almost penniless in Paris during the Russian Revolution, to the designer he embodied enough romance to eventually be the source of inspiration for a brand new High Jewellery collection for Coco’s namesake fashion house.

Titled Le Paris Russe de Chanel, the High Jewellery collection is a tribute to the lost splendour of Imperial Russia as Russian folklore, richly coloured gems and signature Chanel motifs dominate the collection.

Just like in every High Jewellery collection since 2009, the new coveted ranged was designed by Patrice Leguéreau (the Director of Chanel’s jewellery studio), and injected his creativity to marry imperial symbols and folkloric motifs with iconic motifs including the Camellia — a clear expression of Coco’s fascination with the Duke, and the country.

In the collection, you’ll be able to spot the Sarafane headpiece (in our gallery below) and it is a transformable tiara piece inspired by folk costumes and complete with Chanel’s camellias. Plus, throughout the collection, you’ll be able to spot the double-headed eagle — a historic Russian coat of arms.
