Design Days Dubai
After more than four months of sifting through innovative design ideas, Van Cleef & Arpels, in partnership with Tashkeel and Design Days Dubai, has announced the semi-finalists for this year's Middle East Emergent Designer Prize. Centred around the theme of 'growth', both physical and intellectual, the fifth edition of the prestigious competition invited designers to showcase ideas that touch upon heritage and ideals while still being fully functional.
The successful entrants – Aezad Muzaffar Alam, Ali Al-Sammarraie and Tareq Al Khawam, Amal Selim, Anjali Srinivasan, Hamza Al Omari, Ibrahim Ibrahim, Mohamad Ghulman, Raudha Al Ghurair and Sawsan Al Bahar and Ricardas Blazukas – presented a wide gamut of ideas from an organic shelving system and forward-thinking chair design to a reinterpretation of the traditional Islamic latticework and a modular lighting installation. "Each of the candidates responded to the theme of Growth in their own unique and creative style, which lends to making this fifth edition of the Middle East Emergent Designer Prize very interesting and thought provoking", said Jill Hoyle, Manager of Tashkeel.
The semi-finalists will receive Dhs2,000 to create a 3D version of their ideas while three finalists will be awarded Dhs10,000 to present full-sized prototypes, all of which will be exhibited in November along with the announcement of the winner.
