Despite the global health crisis, Milan Fashion Week continued with a plethora of shows – 23 live runway shows and 37 presentations – and there was some much-needed optimism injected into Spring/Summer ’21 collections, as Dolce & Gabbana and Versace both settled on maximalism for next season.

Dolce & Gabbana

For Spring/Summer ’21, Dolce & Gabbana transformed the Metropol into a backdrop that was Sicilian-inspired with unique contrasts of patchworks. A celebration of craftsmanship and creation, the new pieces are a contemporary reinterpretation of the brand’s Spring/Summer ’93 collection and feature a combination of embroidered denim, stripes, buttons and print patchworks.

Versace

Versace digitally transported us to Versacepolis, “a utopian settlement on the seabed ruled by Medusa,” for Spring/Summer ’21. The collection consisted of Donatella Versace’s “hidden treasures” as under-the-sea themes came in bold, graphic prints. Hero supermodels including Irina Shayk, Adut Akech, Joan Smalls and Anna Ewers were spotted on the runway fronting vibrant separates, zesty prints and a kaleidoscope of shades.

“I wanted to create something disruptive, something that could be in tune with what has changed inside all of us. To me that meant dreaming of a new world. A world made of popping colors and fantastic creatures and a world in which we can all coexist peacefully. This collection has an upbeat soul and is optimistic, dreamy, positive… These are clothes that bring you joy,” says Donatella Versace.
