7 trends to try for Autumn/Winter 14
New York Fashion Week is about to start and its all about to get very confusing again – even for fashion's insiders. Spring/Summer 2015 on the runway, Autumn/Winter 2014 in the shops – Cruise 2015 about to follow. It's a fast-paced world, and the AW14 shows are now but a distant memory... So here's a handy refresher featuring 7 of Buro 24/7's favourite key trends you can shop now...
The Swinging 60s
Gucci, Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton all cited a 60s inspiration this Autumn/Winter. Think Twiggy, Penelope Tree and Jane Birkin – or for a modern day muse, Alexa Chung. Add flowy mini-skirts, cutesy Mary-Janes, baby doll dresses to your shopping list – and a big thick line of feline black eyeliner to your eyes.
Sometimes all that glitters really is gold – as demonstrated with this punchy trend for Autumn/Winter 14. Saint Laurent, Rodarte, Prada, Chloé and Moschino all sent their girls down the runway with a bit of bling. Whether you add some shine via the season's must-have gold jackets (as pictured above), or opt for the slightly less OTT gold accessory is up to you.
It's sportswear, but not in the traditional sense. Fendi, Miu Miu, Céline and Jeremy Scott all had a go at turning the athletic aesthetic on its head this season. Oversized parkas, clumpy trainers, sneaker boots, fleece, mesh and a vibrant colour palette are the things to look out for if you want to give this trend a whirl.
Fairytale's finest paraded the catwalks at NYFW, PFW, LFW and MFW last February/March – from Little Red Riding Hood at Dolce & Gabbana, to Snow White at Alexander McQueen, to the Queen of Hearts at Valentino. It's fantasy red carpet glamour at its finest and on our wishlist for all of the upcoming Autumn/Winter events.
The New Androgyny
Every season the suit gets a new look and for Autumn/Winter 14 its got a masculine edge. The trick is it's not too androgynous, and it's not too girly. Think feminine pastels with loose "I borrowed this from my husband" tailoring and chic pyjama style separates. We are coveting Chanel's head-to-toe one-colour suiting for AW14. Also look to Ralph Lauren, Stella McCartney, and Hermès for inspiration.
If the 60s aren't your thing, perhaps the 70s – namely its iconic argyle sweater is? Tommy Hilfiger took this trend and ran with it in a major way, staging his Autumn/Winter 14 show on a makeshift snowy mountain. Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton and Saint Laurent also have plenty of pieces to offer this season if mountain chic rocks your skis.
The cape has potential to be one of the most worn pieces this season – Burberry's Autumn/Winter 14 monogrammed poncho capes have already been coveted by Delevingne, Palermo and co. Cape or poncho, hood, fur or OTT cocoon – just ensure that there's something from Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana or Burberry draped nonchalantly over your shoulders and voilà – wardrobe updated.
