The city of Paris is naming a street after legendary French designer Sonia Rykiel
To be unveiled during PFW
Paris Fashion Week officially begins tomorrow and it looks set to be an extra special occasion for French brand Sonia Rykiel. It has just been reported that the brand's founder Sonia, who passed away in 2014, will be honoured with her very own street during the 10-day long event and the unveiling will coincide with her eponymous brand's S/S '19 runway show.
According to WWD, part of Boulevard Raspail will be closed down to host the show on September 29 and ahead of the start of the show, the Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo will unveil a plaque renaming part of the boulevard after the legendary designer. Allée Sonia Rykiel will sit between Rue du Cherche-Midi and Rue de Rennes and is close by to where Sonia lived and worked for much of her life.
It's fitting timing given that 2018 marks the brand's 50th anniversary. The effort to have a street named after the late designer was spearheaded by her daughter Nathalie, who told WWD, "I absolutely wanted a place in Paris on the Left Bank to bear Sonia's name. It felt like something important, symbolic, that reflected who she was, and City Hall was extremely supportive of the idea. What's beautiful is that it ties her name to Paris forever."
