New York Fashion Week: Prabal Gurung Spring/Summer 16

An ode to Nepal

Prabal Gurung makes his native Nepal the centre of his Spring/Summer 16 presentation as he shows a collection brimming with colour and glamour…

Nepalese designer Prabal Gurung has been active in raising relief funds to aid the humanitarian crisis caused by the catastrophic earthquake that hit his native Kathmandu in April. He was profoundly moved by the extent of the situation and he continues to raise awareness of the ongoing need to help those affected. His Spring/Summer 16 runway was, of course, another prime opportunity, opening the show with a group of chanting monks, and drawing on his homeland for inspiration for the collection.

His efforts were not forced or synthesised for effect but rather genuine, authentic and somewhat peaceful. As for the designs, Gurung turned his influence into a glamorous celebration of colour, infusing Nepalese orange, saffron and rose shades across the lineup.

Gurung aimed most of his focus on dresses and evening separates, with sparse mention of trousers or pants. Silhouettes were fluid and sophisticated, beginning with leaner shapes, the evening-wear crescendoed with fluttering and sweeping gowns. Discover the collection in full via our gallery below...
