As a Native American, no less

British fashion magazine Elle UK has placed Pharrell Williams on its July issue, prompting backlash from the Native American community

The music and fashion star traded his signature Vivienne Westwood hat for a Native American headdress on the cover of the latest issue of Elle UK. Unfortunately image has incited anger and disappointment – and prompted Pharrell to apologise.

"I respect and honour every kind of race, background and culture. I am genuinely sorry," he said yesterday morning through his publicist.

It's unclear what prompted Pharrell's fashion change, the Elle UK Facebook page has been flooded with negative comments highlighting how disrespectful it is to wear Native American headdress if you happen to not be an actual Indian chief, earning each feather on your own merit. A backlash campaign with the hastag #NotHappy has been launched on Twitter.
