Nike confirm its working on self-lacing 'Back To The Future' shoes for 2015
Forget the DeLorean... the future has arrived
The high top style features a flared ankle opening above the strap and a battery powered light and self tie mechanism.
Nike's innovation chief, Tinker Hatfield, has confirmed at a trade show that the shoes – Nike Air MAG – will be available to customers at some point this year (the year they were featured in the movie) after a long drawn out teasing campaign that started in 2011.
Over 15 years after the first release of the 1989 film, an online petition by staunch fans of the popular film series, for the return of the sci-fi shoe, caught Hatfield's attention. With the help of footwear innovator Tiffany Beers, they began to build the Nike Air MAG from scratch. After thousands of hours of work and more than 6 redesign attempts the shoes were a perfect replica of the 1989 Nike MAG worn by Marty McFly. A limited quantity of 1,500 pairs were auctioned on eBay reaching a top price of $900,000, on September 8, 2011 and proceeds were dedicated to the The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's disease research.
Hatfield has simply said that there are still "11 and two-thirds months left in 2015" so an exact release date for the long awaited shoes is still unknown. As the waiting list of hopeful Nike Air MAG owners grows, stay tuned to Buro 24/7 to be the first to hear when they will hit stores...
