Michelle Obama officially opens the Anna Wintour Costume Center

Ahead of the main Met Gala festivities

New York becomes the focus of the entire fashion industry as First Lady Michelle Obama officially cuts the ribbon of the Anna Wintour Costume Center, formerly known as the Costume Institute

On officially cutting the ribbon at The Metropolitan Museum of Art's new 'Anna Wintour Costume Center' in Manhattan yesterday, America's First Lady Michelle Obama declared, "I am here today because of Anna. I am here because respect and admire this woman, whom I am proud to call my friend," before continuing, "I am here because I am so impressed with her contribution – not only in terms of fashion but in so many other ways in which she cares. This is especially true of the great Metropolitan Museum..."

Paying homage to the famous editor was clearly paramount for Mrs Obama, at the hugely significant event which preceded the Costume Center's annual Met Gala celebrations held late into the night.

Fashion's finest names were present to witness the opening, including Sarah Jessica Parker, who is co-chair of the gala this year, plus many other designers such as Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta (also a co-chair), Stella McCartney, Vera Wang, Diane von Furstenberg and many more...
