Met Gala 2015: The best of the red carpet
Beyonce, Kendall Jenner, Anna Wintour, Amal Clooney and more
Stars from all walks of fame converged on the Metropolitan Museum of Art in central Manhattan last night donning their most exquisite and in some cases elaborate finery for this year's annual Met Gala. The once named 'costume gala' is one of the biggest fashion events of the year, summoning some daring and expressive couture creations, befitting of the themed ball. And this year's theme was oozing with dramatic potential – China: Through the Looking Glass, in support of the museum's exhibition of the same name.
Founder and host of the event, Anna Wintour, lead by example in a custom Chanel gown, drenched in ruffled poppies that reached a crescendo at the shoulder straps. Following suit and her namesake flower, Poppy Delevingne's Marchesa gown was also adorned in red poppies.
Cher and Marc Jacobs
Rihanna went big, shutting down the red carpet with her Haute Couture yellow fur-trimmed gown by Chinese designer, Guo Pei, that trailed behind her for about a New York city block, but left plenty on display at the front. Sarah Jessica Parker also opted for drama, of the vertical kind, with her fiery Phillip Treacy head piece that evoked a sort of oriental mother-of-dragons vibe, worn with her high-slit silky black dress that she designed in collaboration with H&M, created out of its environmentally-conscious materials.
Two more fiery ladies could be found in Amal Clooney whose tiered red strapless gown by Maison Margiela, created by John Galliano did all of the talking as she opted for minimal accessories, and Jennifer Lopez who fired it up in her go-to friend and designer, Atelier Versace.
Kendall Jenner is hitting every best dressed list this morning after smashing it in a perfectly pitched jade green shimmering gown by new boss Calvin Klein Collection, in arguably the most intelligent interpretation of the theme. Big sister, Kim Kardashian wore a feathery fringed white Cavalli gown, which Vogue's André Leon Talley described gleefully as "living" and many are comparing to Beyonce's 2012 Givenchy gown.
Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen
Red-headed beauty Jessica Chastain wore a beautiful but safe gold Givenchy gown which could easily transfer to the Oscars red carpet, whilst Kate Hudson wore a sequinned gold gown by Michael Kors, and was accompanied by the designer on the red carpet. On the gilded theme, Anne Hathaway also went gold, literally from head to toe, in a Ralph Lauren Collection lame column gown that continued into a draped head covering hood at the top.
The story on everyone's lips is Beyonce's tardy arrival more than an hour after all of the other guests were seated. Photographers were near giving up when Queen Bey finally made an appearance with husband Jay Z in a barely there Givenchy gown that used spaced out sequin embellishment to cover her modesty, and adorn the puddled bottom of the dress. But ever humble, she was profusely apologetic.
