In conjunction with 'Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture', the Fashion Design Department at the Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar (VCU) hosted a lecture by British fashion designers L'Wren Scott and Stephen Jones this week. The lecture focussed on creating and growing a successful fashion brand with a special presentation from each designer. The talk was titled 'Adventures in Fashionland'.

The event has seen a series of initiatives to showcase the rich cultural diversity of Doha and London.

The Mathaf, Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha also hosted 'An Enchanted Evening', a first of its kind fashion display as part of the proceedings – featuring work by internationally recognised UK designers and emerging female fashion entrepreneurs from Qatar's Roudha Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Doha showed off designs by rising star of the Qatari fashion scene, Wadha Al Hajri (contemporary womenswear) and traditional womenswear by Elham Al Ansari, Fathiya Al Jaber and Hessa Al Mannai, the latter three of whom recently showed their designs to much acclaim at London's Victoria and Albert Museum at 'The September Show'. They represent the trailblazers and innovators of Qatar's burgeoning local fashion scene.

L'Wren Scott and Stephen Jones OBE were also present, joined by other celebrated British designers on the night; Nicholas Kirkwood, Emilia Wickstead and Robinson Pelham – each celebrating Qatar UK 2013's mission to foster cultural exchange and a better understanding of both countries' artistic practices, and long may it continue.
