Clash of the Titans?

Two of the most iconic fashion players in the industry have faced a major hurdle: The clash of Anna Wintour's Met Gala and Karl Lagerfeld's Chanel Cruise show in May this year. There may be trouble ahead...

A calendar collison course has been spotted – Anna Wintour's Met Gala and Karl Lagerfeld's Chanel Cruise show both fall on the exact same date: May 4 2015.

The Costume Institute gala in New York and Chanel’s upcoming Cruise show in Seoul, are both scheduled for May 4 this year – which will surely lead to many editors, celebrities and fashion insiders scratching their heads and wondering which side to take.

According to insiders, Chanel had originally wanted to host its South Korean Cruise showcase on May 11 at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) Zaha Hadid-designed development. However, when Dior announced that it would stage its Cruise show in L.A on May 9, Chanel were forced to re-think the date owing to the distances involved for travel for editors and celebrities (who would naturally want to attend both important fashion events) and landed on May 4.

One of the most important events in New York's social calendar is the Met Gala, which has been hosted by Anna Wintour since 1995, and most recently the museum even named the Costume Center after the Vogue editor-in-chief and artistic director of Condé Nast. The gala is held three days before the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2015 Anna Wintour Costume Center exhibition — China: Through the Looking Glass.

Wintour was reportedly asked about the clash when she recently attended the Dior Haute Couture show in Paris, but expertly "deferred the comment to the museum" according to WWD. Owing to the blizzard in New York, the Met office is closed and therefore officials are unavailable for comment.

Chanel, however, were available for comment and have noted that the scheduling was “extremely difficult” this year. “We had committed to bringing our cruise collection to our Korean clients and May 4 was the only possible date,” the luxury French house told WWD, adding, “Chanel is very much dedicated to supporting the Anna Wintour Costume Institute Benefit this year as we always have. We greatly respect the incredible contributions Anna Wintour and The Metropolitan Museum of Art have made toward the preservation, education and celebration of the art of fashion, and are proud to be a supporter of this important institution.”

The plot may be about to thicken too – as Louis Vuitton are also planning to showcase its latest Cruise collection outside of Paris and are yet to release or confirm a date or location...
