Jean Paul Gaultier's party creates historic Instagram moment
Suzy Menkes, Catherine Deneuve, and Kevin Systrom
Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom is hitting Paris Fashion Week hard. The 31-year-old American entrepreneur and software engineer isn't as famous as his tech peers – for example, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, but he has found himself being courted by the fashion industry. Or is it the other way around?
Regardless, Systrom, or '@Kevin' as he is known on his picture and video sharing enterprise, landed an invite to Jean Paul Gaultier's private couture salon event in Paris on Wednesday night. And thanks to the social media platform that he founded – Instagram – Buro 24/7 Middle East discovered some surprising gems, which we are sure will warm your cockles as much as they did ours...
Firstly, iconic Vogue editor Suzy Menkes, whose Instagram handle is a constant source of smiles, posted a 'selfie' with Systrom with the caption: "What a night! I have been having dinner with Kevin Systrom – the founder of all this: INSTAGRAM."
Menkes then revealed in her next post that she was at the Gaultier dinner, telling her 96.9k followers that despite the fact that the fashion designer is a "genius" he can "barely send a text on his cell phone".
The 71-year-old OBE-holding British journalist then revealed that fellow guest, French icon Catherine Deneuve succumbed to the charms of Systrom and "techno savvy" Schiaparelli spokeswoman Frida Khelfa, and signed up to Instagram there and then.
When asked about the 'selfie' phenomenon, Deneuve retorted “I think it’s ugly.” This may have been an awkward moment for Systrom, who is in Paris to dip his toes into the fashion community, explaining that 70 percent Instagram's content is generated outside the U.S, which inspired him to take the trip. The entrepreneur revealed that he had been to visit Gabrielle Chanel’s historic Rue Cambon apartment. “I posted a selfie,” he confessed. Models Karlie Kloss and Gigi Hadid were also in attendance.
Later, Systrom posted an image with Karl Lagerfeld (below) with the caption "Ok one last one... Life achievement unlocked." He also managed to find time to squeeze in a meeting with Louis Vuitton's artistic director Nicolas Ghesquière and director and executive vice president Delphine Arnault to discuss "fashion and Instagram."
Today, Instagram announced a new advertising tool called 'carousel', read all about it here.
