Haute Couture Spring/Summer 14: Chanel

A modern family affair

With youthful and sporty appeal, Chanel shows off its Haute Couture Spring/Summer 14 collection – silver ‘bum bags’ and kneepads included

Definition was given to the waist in almost each look on the Chanel runway at the Grand Palais in Paris today, with boxy shoulders and voluminous outlines cinched in at the middle. Silhouettes lengthened towards the latter section of the collection thanks to streamlined trouser-blouse combinations and floor length gowns, each iridescent and shimmering in the ultra-contemporary, almost clinical surroundings. And while each look changed drastically, one thing remained; hair was kept short and "feral" by stylist Sam McKnight and the space-inspired heavy metallic eye make-up that was applied by the label's cosmetics creative director, Peter Philips.

The finale saw Cara Delevingne arrive to the runway – which sat at the base of a dreamy staircase – as a modernised 'couture bride', complete with Karl's four-year-old godson Hudson Kroenig (son of model, Brad) carrying her train, whom after which she guided by holding hands.

At the end of the show and to much applause, the pair posed with Karl Lagerfeld who appeared and calmly clutched Hudson's other hand as the crowd loudened, making for one very modern family picture indeed.
