Halima Aden is the first model to appear in Sports Illustrated in a hijab and burkini
Every year, Sports Illustrated gathers some of the world's most beautiful women to shoot for its annual SI Swimsuit Issue. The magazine has included women of all sizes in the past however this year's edition is truly groundbreaking thanks to one model in particular.
Halima Aden is the first model to appear in the magazine's pages wearing a hijab and a burkini. Speaking in an Instagram video on the casting, Halima said, "Growing up in the United States, I never really felt represented because I could never flip through a magazine and see a girl who was wearing a hijab. Don't be afraid to be the first."
In a touching tribute to her homeland, Aden was shot on Watamu Beach in Kenya by Yu Tsai. "I keep thinking [back] to six-year-old me who, in this same country, was in a refugee camp. So to grow up to live the American dream [and] to come back to Kenya and shoot for SI in the most beautiful parts of Kenya — I don't think that's a story anybody could make up."
