Hubert de Givenchy attends exhibition opening of his work in Madrid
Curated by the man himself
Over 50 years ago now, Audrey Hepburn appeared on the silver screen wearing the famous black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany's, and it cemented Hubert de Givenchy's reputation as one of the world's great designers at the time... And probably forever more.
Yet it was not until this week that the first major retrospective of the French designer's four-decade career was launched – as a tribute to him, and to haute couture, a fashion culture described that he thinks will, "soon vanish".
The exhibition that opened yesterday at Madrid's Thyssen-Bornemisza museum features 95 pieces and accompanying accessories, all chosen by Givenchy himself. It offers a beautiful window into his, "fixation with elegance and beauty", which earned him a host of clients including Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly and Hepburn.
The Hubert de Givenchy retrospective at the Thyssen-Bornemisza museum in Madrid runs until January 18 2015
