Calling on Frida Kahlo for inspiration

Editor: Buro 24/7

Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli referenced the painterly world of Frida Kahlo for Valentino's Cruise collection revealed yesterday

Making a definite point to not to take their inspiration point too literally and seem contrived, Valentino Creative Director partnership Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli focussed on the spirit of Frida Kahlo.

“Individuality remains a central point in our stylistic path,” Chiuri said, with Piccioli adding, “We are fascinated by the figure of the female artist, a character able to live following her own schemes and rules, not subjected to any kind of protocol.”

The results saw a collection that ranged from romanticism — white tulle maxidress embroidered with colourful flowers, trees and insects included (nature was a big theme) — to military-like outerwear, even an olive green Parka Jacket given an 'art and craft' feel by way of soft paint marks and embroidery.
