Expo 2020 announces competition for UAE designers to create official uniforms
A huge opportunity
The UAE is gearing up to host Expo 2020 and the board for the worldwide event has just announced the launch of a competition aimed at local designers.
Designers in the region are being encouraged to submit designs for the official uniform to be worn by some 30,000 staff and volunteers during the six month-long event. Announced today in a media statement, Rita Penteado, the Vice President of Human Resources, Workforce and Volunteers for Expo 2020, said, "This competition is a valuable opportunity for designers in the UAE to showcase their talents to millions of people from across the globe. We are looking for a uniform that embodies the Emirati character and will represent the UAE on the world stage. It should also create a sense of pride and unity when worn by our volunteers and staff. The uniform will be one of the most visible elements of Expo 2020 and we are excited to be able to offer such an enormous platform for designers in the UAE."
The statement explained that designs "must incorporate elements of UAE culture, and be practical, weather appropriate, easily identifiable and modest" and added that those that take sustainability into consideration, whether through fabrics or supply chain management, will be viewed more favourably.
The competition is being run with the support of d3 and the Dubai Design and Fashion Council and is open from now until September 30 when the three finalists will be selected. The successful trio will each be given Dhs50,000 to create samples of the line which must includes a top, bottom, jacket, hat, tie, scarf, bag, a kandora and ghitra, abaya and shayla and an Expo 2020 accessory.
Confident in the talent in the region, Penteado added, "We have a distinct advantage in that the UAE community is diverse in background, experience and talent, and this is a chance for Expo 2020 to tap into this creative pool. We want to engage the brightest and most creative minds in the local fashion industry and inspire them to design something truly unique for thousands of volunteers and staff who will help welcome the world to Expo every day for six months."
The winner will be announced before the year's end. Watch this space.
