LVMH have revealed the eight finalists for its 2015 LVMH Prize. Austrian womenswear designer Arther Arbesser, who is based in Milan; the French duo Sebastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant behind the Paris-based Coperni label; British menswear designer Craig Green; French womenswear designer Faustine Steinmetz who is based in London; Paris-based Simon Porte Jacquemus; Marques' Almeida womenswear designers Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida (both Portguese and based in London); American Virgil Abloh of the Off-White label who is based in Milan; and German designer Demna Gvasalia who presents his womenswear line – Veterments, in Paris.
45 experts from the fashion industry were enlisted to help LVMH judge this next round, which included a pop-up during Paris Fashion Week, where 26 hopefuls presented their creations at the LVMH headquarters over two days to the likes of Kanye West and Karlie Kloss.
Delphine Arnault, who is second in command at Louis Vuitton, said the two-day Paris showcase led to some retail orders for the young talents. "Even if you're not one of the eight finalists, the visibility you get from the showroom, and seeing all the people from the fashion industry, is really great for building awareness around your brand," Arnault said.
The eight finalists will now compete for the grant of 300,000 euros and a year of coaching from LVMH executives. On May 22 the designers will be taken to the Frank Gehry-designed Fondation Louis Vuitton, and given just ten minutes to present their collections to a star-studded jury. Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Nicolas Ghesquière, Raf Simons, Phoebe Philo, Riccardo Tisci and Jonathan Anderson, along with Arnault, Kenzo creative directors Humberto Leon and Carol Lim; Pierre-Yves Roussel, chairman and chief executive officer of LVMH Fashion Group, and Jean-Paul Claverie, an adviser to LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault and LVMH's head of corporate philanthropy, will all be evaluating the young hopefuls and their creations.
