Plans ahead of this year's CFDA Awards, are somewhat different from years gone by. The traditional annual CFDA Journal that accompanies the awards is set to be sent out to invitees ahead of the event, thanks to a partnership with Lexus. Traditionally, guests have to wait until they are taking their seats on the night before they can leaf through the hardcover guide to profiles of award winners.
Trey Laird has lead the journal's creative elements once again, employing Barnaby Roper to direct from behind the lens and shoot portraits and short films for each of this year's nominees and honourees. Brian Molloy, was in charge of styling. This year's photoshoot was scheduled to coincide with the Met Gala in the best hope of gathering the international subjects, such as Tom Ford, Public School's Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, The Row's Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Proenza Schouler's Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez and Rag & Bone's Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, in one place.
However, there was on key figure whose schedule kept him from attending the photocall – Pharrell Williams. Laird decided that creatively, a stock image of the Grammy-winning musician and producer would not do for his editorial vision of the journal, so he devised a creative solution. He enlisted model Joan Smalls as Williams' understudy, styling her to look like the fashionable artist with some embellished Adidas Stan Smiths and other elements of Pharrell's style.
"Joan really became Pharrell. It was amazing. I loved the idea of bringing in someone like Joan, who is at the height of fashion and who has such sophistication," Laird said. "He hasn't seen it yet. I don't even know that he knows about it."
Other interesting creative twists in the journal include a feature on the Olsen twins, who are being recognised for their work on The Row, label, photographed from the back. Stay tuned to Buro 24/7 Middle East for the pictures fresh from the journal as soon they are released...
