Fashion designer and founder of the indomitable Carolina Herrera empire – Carolina Herrera – is to be honoured with a Portrait of a Nation Prize at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery…

The Venuzuelan-born designer, turned American citizen, Carolina Herrera, is to be honoured as one of this year's 2015 Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery honourees, in a special celebration taking place this November.

Herrera joins fellow winners Aretha Franklin, Maya Lin, Henry "Hank" Aaron and U.S. Marine and Medal of Honour recipient Cpl. Kyle Carpenter, as one of the chosen personalities to be celebrated at the inaugural American Portrait gala on November 15.

The event, held in Washington DC, will see each of the named recipients receive The Portrait of a Nation Prize for their achievements in the arts, business, entertainment, military service or sports and their commitments to service. The portrait of Herrera (pictured above) was captured by the late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe back in 1979.
