Cannes 2015: Woody Allen's 'Irrational Man' premiere
With Emma Stone and Parker Posey
Director Woody Allen was joined by Irrational Man star Emma Stone on the Cannes 2015 red carpet this weekend. The film marks Allen's 11th Cannes movie and his 46th project as a director.
The night before – in an exclusive interview with Deadline – Allen was asked why he didn't want to premiere Irrational Man in the competition orginally, to which he answered: "I've never had a film in competition in my life. I just don't feel you can say one film is better than another. Who's to say some arbitrarily appointed group of judges can decide one is better? Is The Godfather better than Goodfellas, or whatever came out the same calendar year? You don't make these films to compete. People make films for different reasons. For money. Or, they make them because something in them demands artistic expression. I do it because I enjoy the work. Once a film is over and I see it in this room and we've taken it as far as we can go, with no room for improvement... that's it. It leaves this room and I never see it again ever, for the rest of my life."
Sadly Stone's co-star Joaquin Phoenix could not make the premiere, but Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Melissa George, Ines de la Fressange, Michelle Rodriguez and more all turned out to see the 79-year-old director's latest film make its Cannes debut.
