The London Collections Mens AW15: Alexander McQueen
Sarah Burton's bold brigade
In a poignant runway show, Alexander McQueen's creative director modernized an army uniform's enduring realness and rich history via innovative tailoring and unusual fabric choices.
Backstage, Sarah Burton said the Regency period inspired the high waists of suits, long coats and officer jackets in the dark lineup. Magnifying geometry with the use of the letter X, the shape was seen across blazers in brocade florals, or as the cut of a piece with the middle of the X resting at the belly button.
In hues of olive, navy and bright blue, Burton also used patterns of poppies, which at first glance looked like a delicate camouflage print. While chunky army knits, rigid shirts and varsity-style with leather sleeves were interspersed with the dapper suiting, with words like "Valor", "Honour" and "Truth" printed vertically across striped outerwear.
