Hatem Alakeel releases a new collection that practices the art of balance

Hatem Alakeel launched a collection that merges its elegant aesthetic with sportswear chic...

Saudi Arabian designer, Hatem Alakeel is known for recreating the traditional Middle Eastern garment, aptly titled the thobe. Whether he introduces a modern take on to the piece via contemporary tailoring, intricate details or a sportswear aesthetic, there’s usually poise to his collections.

For the new season, Alakeel (who is also a columnist for Buro. Middle East’s Gems of Arabia) juxtaposes sportswear chic with the polished elegance of his eponymous label’s shirts — each embedded with an element of surprise.

The collection, titled Zebra, practices the art of balance by blending opposites including versatile kimono shirts that can be worn for casual to formal occasions. The biggest surprise however, is the collection’s main symbol (the zebra), which comes complete in the form of Arabic calligraphy.

A symbol of community, freedom, balance and individualism, the zebra signifies a deeper meaning for the designer. “For me, they also signify a deeper spiritual meaning, through the art of blending opposites — just like yin and yang. The dual aspect of opposites brings clarity to see things in new levels of truth. Zebras, to me, impart a deep wisdom to those who consider the world as black or white.”
