The season’s biggest trends, according to Shopbop’s Associate Fashion Director Kate Johanson

Here's what you need to add to cart
Shopbop was recently in town to celebrate the S/S18 season and we caught up with the site's Associate Fashion Director to talk trends...

So many trends, so little time. Thankfully, Kate Johanson, Shopbop‘s Associate Fashion Director, is stylishly skilled at sorting the must-haves from the mix. We stole a few minutes of her time in Dubai to talk about what’s big for the season, and where we should be focusing for next…

What are the biggest trends for S/S18?

Pastels: Whether robin’s egg blue or sorbet yellow,  this season’s interpretation of powerful silhouettes and interesting textures in the sweet hues packed a punch. A pastel palette, seen from notoriously edgy brands like Tibi and Acne Studios, now feels refreshingly modern and no longer for just the faint of heart.

’80s Daytime: There’s no denying that the Dynasty era is back in a big way. Think exaggerated details like puff sleeves, nipped waist powersuits, diamante accessories — regardless if the look is for day or night, excess is key.

Matching Sets: This is perhaps my favourite trend for Spring. The matching set is a must, solely for its convenience and ease. These effortless combos guarantee an elevated look (and a few more minutes of sleep) without wasting every morning agonising over what to wear.

What are three key pieces to own for this season?

A belt bag: whether you prefer to wear it cinching your waist or thrown over the shoulder, hands free is the way to go; denim separates: whether it’s a denim dress or tailored blazer, the fabric once symbolic with casual living suddenly feels more refined in unexpected sportswear styles; and a floral duster: this is the most versatile item you can own in 2018. Make this maxi-housecoat street-worthy by sourcing one in punchy florals interpreted in dramatic colours and different scaled buds.

Which new brands are you most excited for this season?

Simon Miller, Brother Vellies, Maison Chateau Rogue, Tatanaka and Volon.

Looking forward to next season, what should we be on the look out for/which trends will prevail for another season yet?

Western: With hints of it seeping in for Spring, the western trend is expected to be full force come Fall. Yoke detailing and cowboy boots paired back to long flowy dresses will become must-have closet staples.

Plaids: Tartans continue to be important through Fall. In spring we lightened them up with ditsy florals but there’s no getting rid of the print. Head-to-toe plaid suiting spans the seasons as well as a heritage checked skirt or jacket worn with a cool tee and dad sneaker to feel more street style than school uniform.

Layering: The art of layering has never been easier than with the recent trend of slouchy tailored separates. Items like easy trenches, turtlenecks and button-down blouses will work overtime into Fall once you see how easy it is to keep piling on the pieces.
