The Fashion Edit: A column by style expert Emilie Kareh
And her wardrobe ‘Coups de Coeur’
"I'll start at the beginning: I am a Lebanese freelance stylist born in Beirut, raised in Paris, 'art schooled' in London and 'fashion magazined' in New York. I now live between Los Angeles, New York and Paris – depending on where the next project takes me. My heart, however, remains in Beirut and the Middle East.
I am writing to you from Los Angeles, California. Or should I say more precisely, Hollywood. Unfortunately though, I won't be talking much about the motion pictures (unless I need to share a movie crush soon, because I do watch a lot of them). Fashion is the main subject here...'The New'.
This is my introduction for you to items I like, trends from where I travel and live – as well as my very favourite 'Coups de Coeur' (loves at first sight), be they from the latest fashion collections or what I am styling in my shoots at the moment.
Talking of shoots, I was styling one of my most loved models yesterday as part of an editorial for Italian magazine Muse. Her name is Guinevere van Seenus and she is everything a model should be: a blank canvas that you can mold into whatever you want. She definitely isn't skinny and has a 'real' woman's body – and that is what I am into: making women embrace their femininity and be confident, whilst having fun, of course..."
Classic 'Coups de Coeur'
Clockwise from top left: Knickers by Stella McCartney: "My motto in fashion is: always have fun. This goes with lingerie too. Stella McCartney definitely has understood that women should play." | Equipment shirt (and sweater): "Always rock your basics. Equipment makes great looking quality shirts and cashmere sweaters. I have a ton of them and wear them religiously. The shirts are great buttoned up for a boyish day look and buttoned down in the evening with a good pair of heels." | Illesteva sunglasses: "I am loyal to this brand. They have the perfect shapes and colours, explore lots of collaborations and I never get tired of collecting them. I'm actually wearing some yellow ones as I'm typing now." | Sabine G jewellery: "Sabine makes amazingly beautiful high end jewellery. Her new collection has an art deco feel to it and I've already placed an order. I own a pinky ring from her first collection and wear it everyday. I should also mention that she is Lebanese too and one of my closest friends..." | Biker jacket by Saint Laurent: "Do I need to say how important is to have a good biker jacket in your wardrobe? One that will last you for years and become like a 2nd skin? No." | Olympia Le Tan clutch: "Talking about friends, Olympia is also a very dear friend and I have known her for years way before she started her brand. I admire her ideas and her brain. Her book clutches are genius, fun and chic: everything that I love." | Charlotte Olympia heels: "Fun, fun, fun." | Versus dress: "I like to wear dresses but I like to be comfortable in them too. The Versus SS14 collection is a hit for me. 90s vibe jersey to mould the body like a sculpture." | Jeans by The Row: "In denim I'm all about a high waist and a good wash and a vintage cut. It looks like the Olsen twins feel the same when it comes to jeans. Seeing a bit of ankle is a plus. " | Gucci loafers: "I love their vintage look. Classics in a candy colour – cool and comfortable. I wear them on shoots and to go shopping too!"
SS14: Key Looks
Prada: "Beautiful, strong and simple for a successful feminist statement."
Alexander Wang: "Very casual, comfortable and sexy – this pajama pink look is what I would wear out in the summer."
Dries Van Noten: "I would like to wear this Dries Van Noten look when I am feeling spiritual – or on a happy and relaxing summer day for dinner – with flat shoes."
Miu Miu: "I call this mint green Miu Miu coat the 'magic jacket' as it will make you feel pretty in an instant. Soft like candy, don't we all want to feel like that every now and then? When it comes to the runway look, the red stockings are just the cherry the cake."
