Anna Wintour discusses why Vogue doesn't only need "deeply tasteful people" on the cover

Addresses Kim and Kanye cover

In a telling statement about her choice of cover stars, Anna Wintour referred to Kim Kardashain and Kanye West as the opposite of 'deeply tasteful'

During a talk at the Metropolitan Museum of Art yesterday, Anna Wintour sat down with Aline Cho for an event called, 'The Atelier with Alina Cho'.

Wintour opened her talk by speaking about one of the most controversial magazine covers in recent memory – the Vogue issue starring an engaged Kim Kardashian and Kanye West ahead of their summer wedding.

If we just put deeply tasteful people on the cover, it would be a rather boring magazine

"I see the role of Vogue is to reflect what's going on in the culture. The first celebrity that I put on the cover of Vogue was Madonna, and that was considered completely controversial at the time, too. It's such a long time ago probably no one remembers, but she was a very controversial figure." She continues, "I think if we just remain deeply tasteful and just put deeply tasteful people on the cover, it would be a rather boring magazine! Nobody would talk about us. It's very important that people do talk about us."
