Ton(s) of ambition: Tommy Ton opens up to BoF about his next venture
Street style photographer frontiersman, Tommy Ton, has not joined the Style.com migration to Vogue Runway, and has instead launched his own site dedicated to his special brand of fashion photography – Tommyton.com. Ton opened up to Business of Fashion in a detailed interview about his ambitions for the new site, as fashion month dawns.
"I still consider myself an outsider," confesses Ton to BoF, whilst describing that his new platform will feature more than 15,000 of his own original images from the past ten years, including those previously featured on Style.com, GQ.com and the photographer's former blog, Jak & Jil. Together with the old archives will be previously unseen images, all categorised and searchable by dates, locations, brands, trends and more: "I thought it was really important, from a fashion nerd's perspective, to be able to look back and view all these images I've taken in one place, and for it to be categorised down to every detail," Ton says.
Original interviews, videos and editorials, will soon be added to the site, as Ton capitalises on his insider access: "I'm so lucky that I have these friendships and the access that I do with brands like Proenza Schouler or Dries Van Noten or even Kanye West," he continues. "I get to shoot exclusive content at the shows, backstage and in the showrooms. There's no place that this content has ever gone, except for occasionally on Instagram."
"It's a huge gamble, but I think it will open other doors," he says. "In fashion, there's just so much change happening and I've been very fortunate to develop a lot of relationships in my career through designers and brands. So, I've been thinking, maybe I should just focus on that and not worry so much about whether or not my name is branded with anyone else's."
