An Interview with Vogue Italia's Franca Sozzani
The Editor-in-Chief speaks exclusively to Buro 24/7
Buro 24/7 | Dubai and the Middle East as a place in general, has a lot of preconceptions and misconceptions. What were yours and how and why have they changed?
Franca Sozzani | What surprised me the most when I first visited Dubai is that 80% of the population is under 30 years old. This makes for an incredible richness for the country and this great potential will definitely make Dubai the land of the future.
Buro 24/7 | What do you think of the way the Middle Eastern women dress? Is it what you expected?
Franca Sozzani | I think that what is important is to have your own style. Being able to mix tradition with innovation is definitely a successful match.
Buro 24/7 | What do you think of the design talent in the Middle East?
Franca Sozzani | The VFDE fashion show yesterday featured several designers from the Middle East. I was impressed by the craftsmanship of their creations and very much appreciated it. Designers like those are used to working in an atelier on very special pieces. The next step is to be successful – especially at an international level – and to expand the offering to meet every woman's needs. Also it's very important to have an identity – designing one great collection is not enough, you need to guarantee consistency.
Buro 24/7 | What are the plans for Vogue Italia Dubai Fashion Experience in the future?
Franca Sozzani | We're aiming at repeating an important fashion moment like this. There are many fashion weeks in the world already, so we have to think to something special for Dubai to enter the circle of the fashion capitals of the world.
Buro 24/7 | What has been the highlight of your trip?
Franca Sozzani | Meeting a lot of young people, and not only gravitating around the local fashion scene. All this energy is very contagious.
