"Dubai is the opposite to where I am from and I love the contrast" – Alice Temperley

An interview with the British designer during her recent UAE visit

From recent collaborations with Harrods and the British Fashion Council to designing coveted bridal wear and ready-to-wear collections for her eponymous label, Alice Temperley is a fashion force going from strength to strength, despite some changes in both her personal and professional life...

On a recent visit to the UAE for her label Temperely's trunk shows, client fittings and VIP events, Buro 24/7 Middle East was able to catch the designer on her stay in Dubai.

Since starting her fashion label in 2000, the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins graduate has been taking the fashion industry by storm, one market at a time. Well-known for her beautiful fabrics, vintage aesthetic and hand-finishes, Alice Temperely produces two lines; Temperley London and Temperley Bridal, while balancing her 24-hour job of being a mother.

Buro 24/7 Middle East sits down with the designer as she gives her thoughts on Dubai and the Arab woman...

  1. "The Arab woman is very intriguing and in touch with themselves. They know what they like and know how to have fun."

This isn’t your first trip to Dubai. What do you love about the city?

  1. I have been to Dubai around 7 or 8 times. I love the positivity of this city, the different types of people in and around the city, and the variety of experiences you can have. It is the opposite to where I am from and I love the contrast. It all adds to the tapestry of life. Last time we were here we did a lovely shoot in the desert. I also made my first short film, which is on our website, and the start of a new passion of mine.

  3.

  4. Have you visited any other GCC countries? What were your favourites and what were your observations?

  5. I have visited Abu Dhabi and Qatar both for private clients and for special events in our stores. I was lucky enough to visit some amazing women in amazing palaces. It was a experience I will treasure for ever...

  6.

  7. What do you think about the Arab woman?

  8. Very intriguing and in touch with themselves. They know what they like and know how to have fun.

  1. What is happening with Temperley London Bridal? Your dresses are perhaps a little too demure for the Arab bride, have you or would you consider bespoke creations for this customer? Have you thought about launching a more couture line perhaps?

  2. Yes, our bridal dresses are very ethereal and bohemian – a very English rose look. I have done a lot of bespoke dresses especially for the Middle Eastern customer.

  3.

  4. You have impressed us with the elevation of your brand and quality over the last few years – can you tell us more about this. Was it a conscious thing?

  5. For each show season I do make some very decadent dresses and these always sell and stay as brand classics. I also make myself a fantasy gown each year for my summer parties and these always end up going into the range. I love couture. We have elevated everything over the last few years – more italian manufacturers – more novel fabrics from both England and Italy. Also the focus is now on Temperley London as one line. I want to focus on what I am good at and stick to one identity and one woman... Which is myself and the women around me.

  1. "I now have a new CEO, Ulrik Garde Due who is embraces the vision and will take the brand forward. Of course no separations are easy, but my ex and I are good friends and thrilled to have the right CEO for the company we founded together."

  1. Your ex-husband Lars recently left the business, was that a difficult phase personally and professionally? How did you navigate that?

  2. I now have a new CEO, Ulrik Garde Due who is embraces the vision and will take the brand forward. Of course no separations are easy, but my ex and I are good friends and thrilled to have the right CEO for the company we founded together.

  1. Your annual summer parties look like a lot of fun, when and why did you start this tradition? Have you thought about publishing a book about hosting like Valentino recently did?

  2. I have hosted the annual summer costume party each year since I was 18 and they continue. I love bringing people together and they are always amazing fun. We are working on another book but not on parties – I save these for private fun.
  3. Dubai is the opposite to where I am from and I love the contrast

  1. It’s such a cliché, but it is a really interesting question if answered honestly – how do you juggle motherhood with business?

  2. Motherhood and business is very hard to juggle. I have had the same amazing lady helping me since Fox was 2 weeks old, so she is like another member of the family. Without this trust and loyalty, it would have been almost impossible to juggle.

  3.

  4. What’s the best advice you have ever received, why was it so good and who was it from?

  5. "Believe in yourself be passionate, do what you love and just get on with it…" –  I actually have no idea who told me – but it’s what I believe in.
  6. Dubai is the opposite to where I am from and I love the contrast

  1. What’s on Alice Temperley’s 2015 ambitions list?

  2. Working on retail expansion, a new book, our 15 year anniversary, and some exciting new developments...

  3.

  4. What have been your favourite discoveries of 2014?

I recently visited Sayulita in Mexico – I was there for a wedding and the beaches around there are lovely.

White Lines is a great song I used for my recent show.

The Canon G1X camera is the best non SLR camera, and I adore Grayson Perry, the English artist and his huge tapestries.

We think you should launch a lifestyle range to complement your chic way of life – is this something you would consider?

Yes I am actually working on more lifestyle and cannot wait….
